Digital Libraries and Digital Imaging: The Big Picture

A day long pre-conference workshop presented by the LITA Technical Issues of Digital Data Interest Group

    Friday, July 7, 2000, 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Chicago Hilton & Towers, Room TBA

Libraries and museums are creating collections of digital images at a rapid pace, but how easy is it for users to find and use this material? This workshop offers an opportunity for thoughtful discussion on the meaning and cultural impact of digital libraries. How do researchers like using digital images, and how is this affecting research? Are digital collections cataloged in such a way that they are integrated with other materials on related topics within institutions? How well are the creating institutions maintaining their digital image collections? Will the digital data still be useable in 10 years time? A series of speakers, including library science eductors that are digital library experts, digitizing project managers, and a vendor representative, will address these issues and more.

To register online, start at the preconference Web site: http://www.lita.org/ac2000/preconf.html

    Speakers & topics:

Howard Besser, Associate Professor at UCLA's School of Education and Information Studies and Adjunct Associate Professor at UC Berkeley's School of Information Management & Systems -- metadata for digital libraries and making digital libraries work

Cindy Miller, Director of Product Strategy, Endeavor Information Systems Inc. -- creating, managing, and accessing digital collections in conjunction with the traditional library catalog. Miller will be discussing the practical application of metadata standards to building digital collections. She will talk about Endeavor's product, ENCompass, but promises it will not be a sales pitch! Rather, the talk will focus on lessons learned throughout this product's development and how Endeavor applied that research to technical design and actual building of the product.

Bernard Reilly, Director of Research & Access, Chicago Historical Society -- The opportunity that the World Wide Web presents for delivery of museum and special collections materials in digital form to a global audience presents a number of professional and administrative challenges. These challenges arise from the costs of digital technology, constraints on intellectual property, the mercurial nature of digital media, and so forth. As museums and libraries shift more of their activities to the digital environment, there are new skill sets that will be demanded of staff, and new resources that will have to be brought to bear on those activities.

Beth Sandore, Coordinator for Imaging Projects & Associate Professor of Library Administration at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign -- user surveys, user satisfaction with digital images, designing interfaces with user input

Christie Stephenson, Assistant Head, University of Michigan Digital Library Production Unit and/or John Weise, Coordinator of Imaging Services -- When digitizing is not a special project anymore, but part of library service. Michigan's federating model for delivering images from diverse collections
