Department of Preservation and Conservation
Cornell University Library is seeking a highly motivated individual to join
its Digital Imaging and Preservation Research Unit in the Department of
Preservation and Conservation. Since 1990, the Department has conducted
pioneering research into the use of digital imaging to retrospectively
convert library and archival material. The focus of research was extended
in 1996 to include the preservation of digital materials. Under the joint
direction of Anne R. Kenney and Oya Y. Rieger, this unit also offers
educational programs and produces technical reports and other publications,
including RLG DigiNews (http://www.rlg.org/preserv/diginews/).
Responsibilities:
Responsible for conducting high level research and writing on various
aspects of digital preservation to support the educational and research
activities of the Digital Imaging and Preservation Research Unit.
Investigation areas include imaging, technical infrastructure, metadata,
image file formats, compression, network access, and preservation models
and strategies.
Provide research support for Project Prism by gathering and analyzing
relevant data, conducting surveys, and by synthesizing current and emerging
practices in digital preservation. Project Prism is funded by the Digital
Library Initiative 2 (DLI2) and its goal is to develop, test, and refine
policies and mechanisms that ensure the integrity of digital resources.
Knowledge/Experience Requirements:
ALA accredited MLS or the equivalent in training and experience. Work
experience in digital imaging, electronic collection building and
management, data archives, metadata, or electronic publishing highly
desired. Demonstrated interest in the issues and initiatives related to
digital preservation, including its administrative and technical aspects.
Ability to work independently and as a member of a tightly-knit research
team; must also be able to function well in interdisciplinary projects
sponsored by the Library and the Computer Science Department. Strong
communication, organizational, and analytical skills. Solid facility with
personal computers. Familiarity with modeling (and preferably experience
with tools such as Unified Modeling Language), systems analysis, and
JavaScript is desired.
This is a full-time appointment for 2.5 years with renewal depending on
funding.
