According to O'Reilly's _Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats_, the
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) standards committee established
the JPEG file format(s) not as a single algorithm, but rather as "a
toolkit of image compression methods that may be altered to fit the
needs of the user." *.jpg, *.jpe, and *.jpeg are all valid JPEG file
extensions. A list of different programs that recognize/implement the
different file extensions is located at:
http://www.webdesk.com/filetypes-applications/#j You may also want to
visit the Joint Photographic Experts Group's website http://www.jpeg.org
for more information.
