Hello Imagelib'ers,
Here's a short message inviting you to visit a new Web exhibit at the U
of Arizona. "The Little Cowpuncher: Rural School Newspaper of Southern
Arizona" http://digital.library.arizona.edu/cowpuncher/
The Little Cowpuncher was a typed/mimeographed newsletter composed in
the late 1930s and early 1940s for several Southern Arizona ranch
schools. It is a unique artifact -- remnants of it are housed in the
UA's special collections and at the Arizona Historical Society in
Tucson. Joan Sandin, a local writer of children's books, discovered it a
few years ago when doing research for a book. We looked at the original,
which was deteriorating terribly, and got a small grant to help fund
creating a Web version that conveys the look and feel of the original.
There's more detail on the site's "Project History" page.
I think the online version will become popular with today's Arizona
school students and teachers. There is a mix of Spanish and English on
the 400+ newsletter pages and some charming illustrations. Joan has
identified some of the original "little cowpunchers" who still live in
Southern AZ and we have just submitted a proposal for new funding to
support interviewing these folks and streaming video of the interviews.
Feel free to email me any comments. Regards, Stuart
