We own the Nikon LS-3500 slide scanner. It's high quality, high
resolution (up to 4,000 x 6,000 pixels - 72 MB), but slow by today's
standards.

We are currently evaluating scanners and will probably purchase the Kodak RFS 2035-Plus. Its the fastest scanner out (although the new Polaroid is a close second), It goes to 2,000 x 3,000 pixels which is fine for 98% of what we do, its a 12-bit scanner so it should retain slightly better shadow and highlight detail than our older Nikon and we can get a stack loader for it. Scan time for 2Kx3K is 40 sec. and 1Kx1.5K is 11 sec. Screen resolution scans are even faster.

Maron, Inc. makes an automatic stack loader that will hold up to 300 1.4mm plastic or cardboard mounts and can scan them automatically. They have models for both the Kodak RFS 2035 and the Nikon LS-3510. It requires a Macintosh running Adobe Photoshop. The user sets up the first slide, selects the scan resolution and file format to be saved, the directory or folder to save them in, and supplies a user-selected "base" filename for that batch of slides. The software appends a number to the base filename that corresponds to its order in the batch (filename-001, filename-002, ... filename-300).

Depending on the selected resolution, the RFS 2035-Plus/Maron stackloader combination can scan up to 6 slides per minute!
