The Preservation Department at the Olin Library at Cornell University
would like to purchase a low-cost grayscale/color scanner...
...we have narrowed our choice to the Envisions ENV24Pro or the HP
Scanjet IIcx scanner. We are interested in receiving user feedback
for either of these products.
I have a ScanJet IIcx which we are very happy with. Can't speak
to the Envisions device, but here are responses for the
ScanJet...
I'll run these tests as I type this message, so the numbers are
real.
What is the average time required to scan a text page at 256 levels of
gray?
To scan an 8 1/2 x 11 page with 256 levels of gray took 12
seconds to acquire the preview image and the final scan took 20
seconds with a scanning resolution of 150 dots per inch. This
produces a 1 meg file.
To scan an illustrated page (halftone or photograph) at 256 levels of
gray?
Same as above.
The same questions for 24-bit color scanning.
12 seconds for preview image. 35 seconds for final scan with a
final resolution of 1k x 1k x 24-bit.
Overall impressions of image quality?
Excellent.
Ease of installation?
If you have a SCSI adapter in your computer already, you just
plug this thing in. If not, it comes with a little SCSI board
which must be installed (above tests done with the furnished
board). It's not more or less difficult than adding any other
board to your computer.
Overall performance?
I performs beyond my pre-purchase expectations.
Technical support from company?
Tech support comes first from your dealer. That, of course, is
highly variable. That's where set-up support would come from.
Warranty repairs/replacement would come from HP directly. They
are outstanding to deal with.
Thank you in advance for responses to this query.
You're welcome.
