Another important reason is copyright; just because one *can* make an image available on line in digital form does not mean that he/she has the _right_ to do so. That could bring down the Net as well, though not quite as fast. A couple good copyright lawsuits might work wonders for the growing interest in photos on line.
We need to be as concerned about the ethical and legal implications, as well as the technological ones, and preach about those, too.
But you make a good point -- there are some home pages that give a choice of image sizes for viewing/downloading, depending which icon you choose. Seems like a good approach. I can post the URLs if anyone wants a look.
