JPEG:

"The Joint Photographic Experts Group is a joint committee of t0he ISO (International Standards Organization) and the CCITT (Consultative Committee of the International Telegraph and Telephone) standards association.

They created a standard for the COMPRESSION & DECOMPRESSION of continuous tone images (such as photographs) called JPEG.

Generally, the compression/decompression of images (e.g. as when saving to disk) results in a loss of data, and hence image quality. With JPEG, however, a compression ration of 8:1 will result in no perceptible loss in image quality. In July 1993, 20 leading multimedia software & hardware vendors agreed to standardize on JPEG for bitmapped images and compressed video data under the MicroSoft Windows system...

...For publication...JPEG is as good as it gets."
