In addition to Robert's nice description of compression I would like to add
another catergory to the list he outlined, which was:

Lossy Lossless

Add to this "Visually Lossless" which, of course, is a relative judgement that is subjective. This is used by photogrpahers and artists to sort of "draw the line" where compression ratios have no apparent VISUAL harm to the image. This is usually based on a CRT judgement which is also just an approximation of describing an image visually.
