Compressing/Recompressing is (or can be) risky business. Try to compress only once if possible as a typical 8x8 kernal may not withstand recompression without harmful side effects. If possible try to save your data to inexpensive tape drives. Only use compression when absolutely required. If you intend to do any reproduction of images always avoid compression - especially those with low frequency areas that show very slight brightness changes. Such (images) are at risk of showing banding, blocking, etc. after color seps are made.
