When I took Doug Rea's course on photography on the macintosh a couple of
years ago, (which by the way, i recommend to anyone, it's great). I
learned about visually lossless images: human eye is the final
interpreter. When I came back to work, I got into a discussion with one of
my colleagues and found that lossy and lossless had different meanings for
him.

Since then, when I teach about compression, i give the generic lossless, lossy definitions then introduce the concept of "visually lossless" it seems to make sense to people.
