I support Paul Gherman's suggestion that ImageLib, or some other list/ organization, needs to accelerate discussion of technical, cataloging, indexing and a range of other issues as they relate to linking large numbers of image collections over the net. We have been working with a team of computer scientists and librarians for several years on developing a shared understanding of these and other critical issues: we've learned that it takes time to build language (and shared respect) that supports dialogue across long-maintained boundaries (cs and libraries), and that the best way to do this is to build and share image collections, and define and carry out related research -- together. My one concern here is that Paul's call might be misinterpreted as a call for some standards organization to begin elaborating a new (or old) set of standards: the time for standards will come, but first we need a much clearer shared definition of the critical issues, and some experience about how to cope with them.John Garrett Corporation for National Research Initiatives
