The book does what the title says and spans the major environments of MS-DOS, Windows, OS/2, UNIX, and Macintosh. The CD included contains spec sheets and utilties for working with the formats in various environments and there are directions for mounting it in each of these environments (I've only used it a Unix OSF/1 system). Most, if not all, of the material on the CD is probably available via FTP and Gopher on the Internet, but it is handy to have it collected. The text itself tells you the essentials of the various formats, with reference to other docs for the full details.
