There are a couple of scenarios for image-mapping. I assume you do not control the admin and cgi files for your server, but just have an account on a Unix machine that you are using to create WWW pages.IF your host machine is running the NSCA or CERN httpd server software, then you need to ask the sysadmin for that machine to set you up to use cgi to activate image maps.
HOWEVER, if your host machine is using the Netscape Communications Server, you dont' need cgi to use image maps - you just need the three files you mention: html, gif, and map. cgi for imagemapping is built in. I'm not trying to sell Netscape software, but we are testing the httpd server software on our WWW site, and I noticed that this particular function would be very useful for a shared WWW server such as yours. See your sysadmin in any case, to find out what server software is running.
hope this helps,
