Anne,

I also use Macs. I have used Helix, now Helix Express, for 10 years. It's a robust (for a department) client-server 5thGL RDMS. I use it for data management only at this time. We're currently running Helix Express on a Quadra 630 server with 12 clients.

Helix Express is used for project management and office automation functions: scheduling photography, art handling and audio-visual services; invoicing and maintaining outside Photo Rights contracts; purchasing; photo labeling; inventory of color transparencies and negatives; Slide Library photography; internal and external photolab requests.

There are presently more than 120,000 records which are on-line. There are more than 250 customized standard reports and three different views of the database for the eighteen departmental users.

We have also used a variety of "shrink-wrapped" image database software for specific projects including Kodak's Shoebox and DCI's News Photo Access(discontinued).

The probelm with DCI's Image Access is the data is in a proprietary format (no export/import of ascii) and EmBark is Elephantine. I know there are a number of other 4D based runtime packages but I haven't had a chance to review them.

If you have minimal resources you may want to start with either Helix Express or 4D First, a stripped down version of 4D and them upgrade to full-blown 4D after a year or two of familiarity.

Thanks, Alan
