On a trip down to the Los Angeles Times photo/newsroom a couple of years ago I saw that they were using the Kodak RFS 2500's quite succesfully. I think it would probably be overkill to use much more for newsprint output. It's possible that they've improved upon the 2500's in the time since, but from what I saw then, it was more than adequate for their needs.
The drum scanners would definately show their worth if you were doing a high quality glossy magazine type of publication (eg. National Geographic)
