Message-Id: <mailto:199508182126.QAA05933@library.wustl.edu> Date: Fri, 18 Aug 1995 17:24:13 -0600 From: "William A. Broom" <mailto:bbroom@ACPUB.DUKE.EDU> Subject: WARNING about this solicitation: Re: Government Restricts To: Multiple recipients of list IMAGELIB
Beware of the solicitation attached below which was previously posted on this listserv. It may not be a genuine attempt to collect information but simply a scam. Although the subject may seem worthy, the message has several suspicious elements:-No one signs it or offers identification of its origin. -The "From" entry is suspicious because: --The host "net.american.edu" does not respond to an Internet ping, and a message sent to mailto:johnbach@NET.AMERICAN.EDU" is returned siting an unknown host. The host and userid may be fakes. --The apparent owner of the userid "johnbach", presumably "John Bach" does not appear in the American University (american.edu) online faculty/student telephone book, and "johnbach" is not known to the main site "american.edu" (which may not mean anything). --The "name" of "Restrict" in front of the userid suggests a phantom. -The person or group which will compile and forward the results of the proposed survey is not identified. -The message does not describe how the government is planning to restrict the Internet or justify the urgency it suggests.
If the message is genuine, the sender should have included appropriate identifying information and details.
Does our list moderator/owner have any interest in verifying the owner of the listed 900 number or contacting american.edu to verify this userid? Bill Broom Associate Slide Curator Department of Art and Art History Duke University Email: mailto:bbroom@acpub.duke.edu
