We have had many discussions on this topic.
We used to request clients order and purchase each image just as if it was a request to publish a digital photograph, an
we would supply the image on disk.
Now we allow them to download the image and use it on the web site under these draft provisions:
Permission
Obtain the Library's permission to use the image.
Required text
As well as including the caption details (provided on 'Timeframes') you must use the following text alongside the image:
"Permission of the Alexander Turnbull Library, National Library of New Zealand / Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa, must be
btained before any re-use of this image."
Quality of Image
If you are downloading, we ask you to agree to check the downloaded image against the one on 'Timeframes' and ensure tha
is as close as possible to the image on 'Timeframes'. If there is a marked deterioration, you will need to order a dig
tal copy from the Library to use on your website.
No Alteration of Images
In order to maintain the integrity of the Library's images, no manipulation of the image is allowed, for example, outlin
ng, overlapping, or, duatone washes and other colouring. Sepia toning is permitted.
Website address
If used on the www, we need to know the website address, so we can monitor how the image is used. Please send us the we
site address.
Internal networks
When an image is used on an internal network, the Library requires agreement that, from time to time the Library will in
pect the network to ensure there is compliance with its requirements.
Reproduction fees and reproduction policy requirements
The Library does not charge a reproduction fee for the use of its images on the Internet. Our other reproduction fees a
d reproduction policy requirements are listed under the "Copyright and Reproduction" button on 'Timeframes'.

Does anyone have a policy or fee schedule for use of photographs
on the web. We are getting more and more requests for permission
to use archived photos on both commercial and personal websites.
One group is designing a banner which will be copied and used as
a link back to that groups web page--they also want to use one
of our pictures.
