    The Fundamentals of Digital Projects

    Are you considering digitizing part of your collection? Are you interested in getting more out of your current digitization project? The Illinois Digitization Institute is pleased to offer a series of FREE one-day workshops on the fundamentals of digitization for cultural heritage institutions. Each workshop will explore the basic theories and practices of digitization and will include numerous opportunities for hands-on learning.

    Workshop participants will learn:
    § When imaging is the appropriate treatment for materials;
    § Planning for an imaging project--staffing, equipment, time allocation, storage requirements, cost;
    § How to follow image scanning and quality standards;
    § Ways to create derivative images for access;
    § Archival and preservation practices for digital images;
    § Flatbed scanning techniques;
    § Digital photography techniques.

    Workshops will last from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM and will be held at the Grainger Engineering Library on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The workshops are free, but participants are responsible for their own transportation and lunch. Staff members at any library, museum or archive in the state of Illinois are welcome to attend. Class size is limited to the first 15 individuals who register. Space permitting, we will honor requests for multiple participants from a single institution.

    Workshops will be offered on the following dates:

    August 28 (Tuesday) September 20 (Thursday) October 30 (Tuesday) November 13 (Tuesday) December 4 (Tuesday)

    Registration can be completed online at: http://images.library.uiuc.edu/projects/IDI/ or by contacting Trevor Jones, Project Coordinator, Illinois Digitization Institute at (217) 244-9236 or at mailto:trevorj@uiuc.edu.
