Hello,
We recommend that users include variety of sources in their creator file, including ULAN and others. Most institutions f
nd that no one source fills all their needs; they must have the ability to add new artists to their local file. ULAN ha
been a contributor to NACO; however, we have only contributed a small percentage of our artists to NACO, due to the tim
and effort involved in the contribution process. In short: There is some overlap.
After a hiatus during which we have restructured our data and built a new editiorial system, ULAN will again accept cont
ibutions from selected contributors in the Fall. It will thus grow signficantly. You may learn more about the ULAN and a
cess our online "browser" at http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabulary/. You may find out about the terms of licens
ng by writing to Eileen Kawas, mailto:ekawas@getty.edu .

Does anyone have experience using the Union List of Artist Names and
the Library of Congress Name Authority File in the same
Creator/Author field? Our metadata committee recently raised
questions about whether there are people who were both artists and
authors and might be in both files. Does anyone know how much
cross-over there is, and whether the editors of two authority files
consult each other when establishing a new record?
Thanks.
