CONSORTIUM OF MANUFACTUERS CREATES SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR DIGITAL IMAGING FOR SMALL LIBRARIES AND CULTURAL INSITUTIONS

Regional and small local libraries, regional museums, and historical societies need digital scanning capability. To date, their collections are too small to warrant in-house scanning capability, or the costs and complexity of the needed technology was too high.

Recognizing the need and problem, a consortium of manufactures and distributors of high end digital imaging technology will provide special pricing for qualified institutions under a program to encourage shared digital scanning resources. A very simple idea called the Co-op Library Digitization Initiative (CLDI) based on the "Ag Agent" programs which most states have.

Under this program a regional center would procure a basic turnkey scanning workstation, house it , use it, or loan it out to other small institutions in their area who may or may not contribute to the purchase. The workstations are totally module, can be up graded at any time, include "made simple" and friendly custom documentation, and meet most imaging needs from books, documents, and small 3D objects, to mid sized maps and paintings.

The consortium members include: BetterLight Inc., H.P. Marketing, Inc., Schneider Optics, Inc., Buhl Industries, Inc, Zig Align Inc, and Academic Imaging Associates.

The workstation is called the AIA 45E, and consists of:

    * A BetterLight model 4000E 4x5" format digital scan back with Viewfinder/AI capture software providing custom one click presets for proper scanning of "library" type scans such as "faded page", "glossy map" , "glossy book", etc. The BL 4000E has a resolution of and produces a maximum file size of , five resolution settings up to 3750 x 5000 (53 MB RGB), adjustable ISO sensitivity from 100 to 1600 (daylight), triple 12-bit ADCs - up to 82 million pixels per minute, and a 2 GB internal disk drive for offline image capture. The BetterLight 4000E scan back may contain some refurbished parts. It carries an as new manufactures warranty of 1 year.

    * The 4000E fits in to a 4X5 bellows reprographic camera with ground glass back and a reflex hood to make composition and rough focus easy.

    * Attached to the front end of the camera is a profession Schneider APO lens.

    * The camera's optical rail is attached to a free standing copy stand that features a 40" manual column, an adjustable centering camera arm, and base board. Included is a Zig Align parallelism calibration tool to ensure the precise alignment needed for final digital focus, and a Gepe Pro 14"X18" Hi FI light box for scanning transparencies and negatives.
    * Lighting for the xxx workstation is provided by 2 Buhl HID 70W energy saving "Soft Cubes" on provided stands. These lights throw off no heat, have extremely low UV, have bulbs rated to last 10,000 hours, and produce as much visible light as 750Ws of Tungsten.

Academic Imaging Associates has produced special step by step cook book style documentation for entire system, will provide telephone and web technical support, and serves as the exclusive distributor for the CLDI program.

The AIA 45 workstation is priced at $15,000 plus the cost of shipping. Only qualified organizations (must be a regional cultural institution or group of small institutions willing to sever as a community shared resource) may apply to purchase this system. To receive technical specifications of each component and an application to purchase email http:mailto://www.staff@academicimaging.com , or call Academic Imaging Associates, at 802-362-3169. Please refer to the CLDI Program Participation.
