AusArts, the Web Server for Australian Visual Arts and Music at the Institute of the Arts has moved to a new faster UNIX Server at the Australian National University's Centre for Networked Information and Publications (CNIP). It has been redesigned with sections on administrative information at the Institute of the Arts, an Electronic Library for music and art, and an Exhibitions, Galleries and Concerts section.AusArts began in September 1994 as a Web Server for music and the visual arts. Working within the Canberra School of Art, the Canberra School of Music and the Australian Centre for the Arts and Technology, it has a focus on contemporary Australian art with 400 images and is developing in Australian music.
Initially it was set up on a Macintosh 8100AV. This proved incapable of handling the access capacity required (it froze up!). It has proved very popular around the world (perhaps a bit of a curiosity). Since we are also loading ArtScan, the slide image database on to this machine to act as a 4D Server, we made the decision to move AusArts to the UNIX (DEC 2100)- and frankly do not wish to look back. It is so much faster for images - although the response time across the Pacific may yet be slow. We now work directly to the UNIX server to prepare our Web documents.
