Photoshop is great for enhancing scanned images, but it may not be
enough if you have poor scans. You may want to consider
photographing your objects (1860s diary pages) onto 35mm negative
film and scanning the images to CD using a PIW (photoCD) workstation.
This low cost approach archives your material on film and photocd,
and it provides you with an electronic representation that greatly
exceed what is possible using your HP deskscan.
