RaimundI recently purchased a couple of Umax Powerlook 2000 scanners that can do prints, negatives and slides (there was a previous long discussion a three or four months ago on this list about scanning negatives which you may like to check out in the archives.) It does 2000 x 1000 dpi (10,000 x 10,000 interpolated) maximum resolution. The Umax cost $6500 Australian so is probably cheaper in the States.
We're creating an on-line database of images from our special collections (we currently have 104 000 available, although not very good resolution as they're the result of a previous project to capture to video disk). I'm going through the evaluation of resolutions etc for different materials and for different purposes. I would be interested to compare scenarios with you.
