    <pre> Robert,

We recently purchased a Zeutschel Omniscan 7000 in Oxford for bitonal and greyscale scanning (7500 pixels CCD). It worked very well over almost two years at the Goettingen Digitisation Centre
    (Germany,http://gdz.sub.uni-goettingen.de/), where I've been before.

We do our colour scanning with high-end scanning backs (e.g. Powerphase FX, now also Betterlight Super 8K). The Zeutschel scanner for most material still requires the use of the glass plate to hold pages flat and this is prohibitive for our historic material in Oxford.

The only possible alternative for the Zeutschel, ie. for a colour bookscanner, could be the new series of scanners from the french company I2S (http://www.i2s-bookscanner.com/). We planned to test them here in Oxford in december but had to postpone to the new year. I heard good news about their quality and their mechanics, ie. moving the camera+light source over the object sounds exciting. I2S claims that they don't need a glass plate and that they have a functional book curvature feature in their Book Restorer software. Because they started their work in the digital arena from the software side it could work, we will see.
