JPEG and GIF have very different capabilities and somewhat different uses. GIF only handles 256 colors, JPEG does millions. JPEG uses lossy compression in order to achieve very high compression rates, GIF uses lossless compression.

It handles them both, but it is only able to display GIF images embedded within text. JPEGs are handed off to another application for display.

JPEGView is a great program for viewing both GIF and JPEG images. GIFconverter is a good program also.

JPEGView has extraordinary online help.
