The consumer CD-ROM titles we publish are 8 bit for that reason and the fact that an 8 bit image hasn't the resolution to make it commercially attractive to copy. For 24 bit images watermarking and a restricted spatial resolution suffice.
On detecting image file types I've found the shareware Graphic Converter more useful than PhotoShop, particularly in combination with File Buddy - shareware - which allows you to change a Mac OS file creator and type.
