At Thomas Jefferson University I headed a project to develop an archival image db using Oracle which linked catalog descriptions to thumbnails and full-screen versions. Images are searchable by name, range of dates, photographer, generic subject, etc. It does not offer boolean searching. We made the db accessible through the web. YOu can see it at:http://jeffline.tju.edu/SML/archives/jedi/intro.html
You can also read the article I wrote describing the project in the Summer 1996 issue of Microform & Imaging Review, 25 no. 3, pp. 99-106.
