Cornell University Library Department of Preservation and Conservation is cooperating with ten other New York State research libraries to evaluate the use of the Kodak Photo CD technology to preserve and make accessible a range of research materials. This joint project is designed to provide an assessment of image quality by developing benchmarking formulas for conversion and presentation. The project builds on the work undertaken at Cornell to determine digital capture requirements for text-based materials. We are seeking the assistance of a number of other cultural and research institutions in evaluating how applicable our findings are to their own experience with Kodak Photo CD projects. Participation will involve approximately half a day to examine and compare the capture of detail in Photo CD images against the original source documents. Cornell will supply detailed guidelines to assist participating institutions in this process. In return, participants will receive copies of the report summarizing the findings and recommendations for the use of the Photo CD process to capture and provide electronic access to important research materials, including photographs, works of art on paper, architectural drawings, blueprints, maps, manuscripts, sheet music, and the like.
If you are interested in beta-testing the benchmarking methodology on materials that you have digitized using Kodak Photo CD technology, please contact Anne Kenney (mailto:ark3@cornell.edu) or Oya Rieger(oyr1@cornell.edu) for further information on the project.
