We are running a program to digitize parts of our collection of microfilms of Hebrew manuscripts. We have encountered a number of technical problems and would like to ask members of this list for advice. Our microfilms were prepared from different sources over a period of 45 years. Thus, they are not all scan-oriented. Our main problem is that due to the different sizes and formats of each page we are compelled to use maximum frame size for each page which leads to large amounts of black margins. These black margins greatly increase the size of the files. We cannot use an automatic cropping program because of the uneven formats as described above.
We are scanning using bitonal digitization (TIFF G 4) and the results are good if we use viewers that can display 8 bit gray scale. We are searching for a program for post-scanning processing that can perform manual cropping quickly and efficiently and can display bitonal and full gray scale. We are now using the program "Image Center" but it is not efficient for the type of material we are scanning. We experimented with Hijaak 95 software but found it too cumbersome.
We would appreciate any suggestions for software to solve our problems or advice from anyone who has encountered similar difficulties.
