I think that what Walter mentioned is similar to what we are dealing with here. At present I am working on creating an image database using images of the Southwest. These images come from a variety of sources, and are contemporary and historical photographs, documents of various kinds, maps etc. Some of the images have already been scanned, and some are taken from publications. For example: A historic image in a book is scanned and placed in our database. This basically makes the image a '3rd generation' for lack of better term; the scanned image is of a reproction of the original.
I have found the important point here is to be sure and reference or include all of the 'history' of the image in the cataloging.
The material is being republished, just as anything is reused as new technology, technigues or purposes come up. I think that the important issue is to be sure and record any information about the material so that it can be tracked. This is for research purposes as well as copyright issues.
Thanks, Garry
