There is indeed a Core for the cataloging of images - the Visual Resources
Association Core is a set of metadata elements for the description of images.
You may see the VRA Core at: http://php.indiana.edu/%7Efryp/vracore3.htm
You will find other information regarding the Core and using it on that
same web site.
