I apologize if I am repeating anything already said. I just
subscribed to the list this morning after receiving several queries
from folks who read yesterday's postings.

Pamela Mason's posting yesterday contained a statement requiring clarification. In it, she stated that "RLG Recommendations are image capture at 600 dots per inch as a minimum for preservation- level imaging."

RLG does not (yet, anyway) make recommendations about minimums for image capture. At the March RLG symposium "Digital Imaging Technology for Preservation" speaker Anne R. Kenney (Cornell) said that their experiments with digital imaging of embrittled texts so far seem to indicate that 600 dpi may be an acceptable minimum. RLG, along with its members, is extremely interested in pursuing this question, and hopes to contribute to near term efforts to explore the topic more fully for a variety of source document formats.
