Paul Gherman brought up the topic of cataloging images (non-text) once
they've been digitized. There is a large-scale project that provides
precedent for using MARC and LCSH-like headings for cataloging items.
The National Museum of American Art (Smithsonian Institution) has a
project, The Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture, that has
used the MARC format to describe/catalog/inventory well over 200,000
pieces of American art and sculpture. The records are now part of SIRIS
(Smithsonian Institution Research Information System) an Institution
wide collection of databases (that also includes the SI Libraries' OPAC)
running on the NOTIS system.

To read more about the Inventories, see _Beyond the Book: Extending MARC for Subject Access_ ed. by T. Petersen and Pat Molholt and the essay "The Inventory of American Sculpture: MARC-ing Realia" by Christine Hennessey the project coordinator.
