Some observations:

It would seem that the Object/Action portion of Donna Romer's Visual Resources User Model is at least partially represented in typical text descriptions and catalog records for visual materials. Object and Action can usually be objectively identified, and often can be adequately described in words. So that's what's been done.

It seems from Donna's description of them, that compositional characteristics can be objectively identified, but cannot be adequately described in words that are useful "hooks" for retrieval.

Subjective characteristics are too dependent on cultural and psychological background to be amenable to reliable identification--although perhaps some subjective characteristics could be identified in terms of Object/Action/Composition composites.
