In answer to your question regarding Network sources and/or books for 2D and/or 3D medical image processing, you may want to consider subscribing to the newsgroup sci.image.processing. This group has serious discussions related to the principles and problems associated with image processing in general. The group also has a first-rate FAQ sheet.
Alt.medical.image is another possibility.
