Paul and other Imagelib subscribers,The issue raised here is a difficult one to which I can only contribute the fact that NAL and the University of Pittsburgh School of Library and Information Sciences will be evaluating image retrieval in a special collection of horticultural/botanical prints and a plant pest and disease collection. I posted a brief description of the project, the Photo Image Project, with a call for participants last week. Not to repeat this, the botanical print image database has been developed and indexed at University of Pittsburgh School of Library and Information Sciences. Jim Williams is the project director, Stuart MacLean the database developer, and Edie Rasmussen had oversight of the indexing. The latter used terms from textual descriptions accompanying the material and others from the Royal Horticultural Society's Dictionary of Gardening (1992). While I could provide a sample data record, for a more detailed explanation of the fields, indexing rationale, etc., I'd prefer to ask the participants from Pittsburgh to provide this, if asked. The evaluation, which will begin this fall, will measure, among other factors, satisfaction with the retrieval of the images. The online interface will be through a Mosaic client. Given the way in which images are retrieved through Mosaic, it may be difficult to evaluate success rates based on indexing terminology in the online environment. NAL is producing a CD-ROM version of the database which will use text-based retrieval. This may provide an insight into the success of the indexing methodologies and terms.
