I am new to this very interesting group. Our library serves the
editorial department of the Columbus Dispatch and we have been actively
working on archiving images for about 2 years.
Our data base has grown to 35,000 images online using a unix
based RISC system developed by LEAF & AP. This Informix data base is in
its early stages but some 11-20 larges newspapers are using it. Most
large metros are using or planning this or other systems.
I have posted a msg on the News Librarian listserv (Newslib) on
the existence of this group so I would expect many news librarians will
wish to take part in your discussions.
News Librarians are working with Associated Press to stanardize
the way AP transmitts images (several hundred per day). AP has agreed to
adopt out suggestion for basic classification of images using LCTGM. Our
group is also working with the Prints & Photograph Div LOC since they are
publishing a 2nd edition in Jan 95.
