Many thanks to Terry Lund and Walter Gilbert for providing some much appreciated advice on my scanning/display questions. If I'm following, it would appear that the bottom line is for me to select from the "built-in" sizes provided on the CD (e.g, BASE/4), rather than *specifying* something to the lab (which was my original mistaken assumption); and then doing some experimenting with various levels of jpeg compression. The Kodak web pages are coming in very handy, too.
I still will be using Photoshop since I already have a copy, and do plan to do some editing (e.g., adding text, possibly cropping the border, etc.)
As for my question about darkness of images--after reading your answers, I'm satisfied that this has much more to do with an individual client's monitor (which lets _me_ off the hook!)
