We have begun to digitize the microfilmed collection of Georgia Newspapers(about 15 million pages). Please see our test database: www.usg.edu/galileo/demo.html go to "Demonstration System", then to "Databases", then to Public Databases", then to "Georgia Newspaper" database. The transcribed texts marked up in SGML, and serves as the index for the page images. We will go "live" in a month or so.----- Original Message ----- From: Geoff Cannon <mailto:cannong@HHPL.ON.CA> To: <mailto:IMAGELIB@LISTSERV.ARIZONA.EDU> Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 1999 11:31 AM Subject: Scanning Newspapers

For many years now the Halton Hills Library has been indexing several of the local newspapers. In an effort to make the content of the articles available to users over the WWW we have started to link the indexing to a scanned image of the page.
We are looking for other's who are involved or know about similar projects to share information and ideas.
For those interested in what we are doing you can see an example at: http://www.hhpl.on.ca/localhistory/forms.htm Check "Newspaper Articles" and search "pumpkin" The second article listed has a link to page 3 of the New Tanner. "MacMillan's rewards effort of young pumpkin planter" The response time may be slow because the index is currently in Microsoft Access. The new version which should come online in a month or two runs in Microsoft SQL. It is much faster and we have added some addition features.
TIA
