Dear Alec and others,
Imagelib members were quite generous in their advice in answer to my query
about image editing software appropriate for sets of images. I received
many suggestions, some sent to the list and others sent to me privately. I
thank all contributors for their efforts and generosity of spirit.
Here is a list of the programs suggested:
Photoshop 5.5.
ImageAXS Pro at www.caere.com .
A statement saying that Photoshop and ImageAXS Pro are not suitable.
Luna Imaging Inc. at www.luna-imaging.com. (If only an individual could
afford this.)
Jade <http://mac.org/graphics/jade/> which can do slideshows as well as
contact sheets. (But for JPEGs, not TIFFS).
Canto's Cumulus will allow you to move the thumbnails around by drag and
drop so it is just like being on a slide table. One writer says Cumulus has
cataloging problems. (Though that was not part of the spec.)
Extensis Portfolio has same features cited above for Canto's Cumulus. Cost,
apx $200. (http://www.extensis.com) and is cross-platform
at both user and network level.
EmbARK (with a question mark).
Paintshop Pro
Thumbs Plus (does not allow you to move images around)
"Thotor" is a freeware program that will make thumbnails of image files in
a directory and display them in an HTML file.
You can then click a thumb to link to the full-size version. See:
http://www.stanford.edu/~norda/thotor/
====
I haven't yet researched these. Thotor looked interesting, though its final
display was kind of ugly -- yet it is free. Complex tagging features allow
for output of captions.
Most votes came in for Portfolio.
That's all I have at the moment. When I choose something I'll report on it.
