A Macintosh PowerPC is probably your best choice for having one system that
will handle both Mac OS and DOS/Windows. There are both hardware and
software versions of PC compatibility for the Mac. I don't know what's
available in South Africa but in the States the products are called: 1.
SoftWindows from Insignia Solutions which is the software version. 2. Apple
makes a PC (486) on a card that goes in the PowerMac 6100. The card is the
more elegant solution and also more expensive.
Even if you choose to have two separate computers, you don't need two CD ROM
players. All you need is the drivers (software) for each platform. This is
assuming you get a SCSI interface CD ROM player since that is what you'd need
to be hardware compatible on both platforms. Although I use PC files on a
PowerMac often, I can't address the CD ROM issue specifically as to the
percentage of compatibility. I'm deducing from other experience that it
SHOULD work. If you haven't already experienced it, CD ROM disks vary in
quality and compatibility even when they are created for one platform.
Hope this is of some help.
