We have been working on a web-based image database project for over a year. For categorization we are using the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT). Although designed primarily for (what else?) art and architecture, the AAT has a wealth of terms that are generally useful. We are very pleased with the results.
There's an online AAT browser that's already been mentioned. It is also relatively easy to integrate the AAT into your own database using the files off the standard distribution disks. The file format is pretty simple.
