Add NFR(Near Field Recording) to your list of storage acronyms. The new format, due out late this year, combines the best properties of magnetic hard drives with the size and stability of magneto optical storage. TeraStor, the developer of the new technology, is planning to release two products intially, 10GB and 20GB drives that record on single-sided removable cartridges. They say the next step will be double sided media (40GB!).
Here's the amazing part: The 10GB drives are projected to cost $700-$800; the 20GB in the $1000 to $1100 range. The 20GB discs are expected to cost between $100 and $150.
If the NFR hype is all true, we're looking at storage that is vast, fast, cheap, and will offer decades of reliable stability.
