To try showing the gilt in the artwork use a white reflector behind(above)
the camera so that it reflects in the metallic gold. The reflector needs
to be lit so that it is WHITE.

Some photographers use "tent" lighting by totally building a translucent "tent" over their subject(artwork) with a tiny hole for the camera lens to poke through and light the outside of the "tent" so the subject(artwork) is lit evenly from ALL directions.

Hope this helps.
