The Library of Virginia's Virginia Digital Library Program
The Library of Virginia (LVA) initiated the Virginia Digital Library Program (VDLP) grant program in 1998 to provide implementation, funding, and consulting services for local Virginia libraries to develop and disseminate digitization projects. During Phase I, the VDLP provided the opportunity for fifteen (15) libraries and twenty (20) local digital library projects to be developed and completed. These projects represent more than 1,000 pages of text, 12,000 photographic images, 60,000 card images, and 20,000 database records, and include local newspaper indexes, maps, indexes to cemetery interment records, indexes to diaries and journals, ancestor charts, and numerous local photograph collections.
The following libraries are participating in Phase I: Blue Ridge Regional Library, Bristol Public Library, Eastern Shore Public Library, Fairfax Public Library, Hampton Public Library, Mary Riley Styles Public Library, Newport News Public Library, Northumberland Public Library, Petersburg Public Library, Radford Public Library, Roanoke County Public Library, Rockbridge Regional Library, Suffolk Public Library, Tazewell Public Library, and Waynesboro Public Library.
The first completed projects will be released by the end of July 1999. The LVA's Digital Library Program, under development since 1995, has generated more than 2.3 million digital images of photographs, maps, and original documents, and more than 70 electronic finding aids and databases.
