    <pre> Hi Christine & all,

at BAM/PFA, we've developed our own digital asset management database in FileMakerPro, and it's currently being used by various museums in California who are members of MOAC (Museums and the Online Archive of California) . The reason why we developed our own instead of going ahead with an off-the-shelf product was that we needed a system which could (1) marry descriptive metadata and metadata about digital surrogates, (2) support very specific data standards (REACH element set & CDWA for descriptive md, CDL Imaging Specs for technical md) and (3) export to community specific xml file exchange formats such as EAD (Encoded Archival Description) for collections access and MOA2
(Making of America 2) for complex item browsing. I use a very simple shareware program (iViewMedia) that functions in some sense like Cumulus to extract the technical metadata from the fileheaders, and then import that data into our custom-built database.

I know a lot of the background of this db may not be applicable to your setting since it is very specific to a museum / archive / library community, but if you'd care to learn more about the db, check out http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/moac/imaging/index.html for more details.
