I have used Kodak PhotoEdge to translate natural images into line drawings--there is a filter feature called "find edges" that does just this. It works fairly well for architecture--rendering photographs of cathedral facades and rib vaults into schematics. Sometimes it takes a little work--I usually find I have to increase the contrast before running the image through the filter. The feature doesn't do very well with portraits, usually.
