Tiff class 3 and 4 are for 1-bit images; fax, primarily. they are compression schemes that record changes from one line to the next (only the bits that change from black to white or white to black are noted). The 5.0 you saw was for the development version of TIFF (like WordPerfect 5.1 or 6.0), not any compression scheme. Also, the class 3 and 4 TIFFs can support multipage images (like a fax), a feature that can cause graphical viewers to report "Unsupported Feature" when you try to open them.
