John,
You are absolutely correct about storage; it is key. It is only
by storing materials (film, books, etc...) in the proper conditions
that we can help guarantee their preservation over time.
In your particular instance, however, I think the film stock may not
have been ideal. I'll bet you're dealing with acetate film (state of
the art in th 40s and the 50s, but deteriorating now). At the very
least I would suggest cold storage, but duplication of those reels
would be highly recommended before they can no longer be copied...
